Where to stay in St. Augustine
The best area depends on how you want your trip to feel: walk-everywhere history, a beach morning, or a quiet island base. Here's how the main areas compare.
The Historic District
Stay within walking distance of the Castillo, St. George Street, the Plaza and every Since 1565 adventure. Expect historic inns, B&Bs and boutique hotels, with higher prices and limited parking. Park once and walk everywhere.
St. Augustine Beach & Anastasia Island
About 10–15 minutes from downtown across the Bridge of Lions. Beach hotels, condos and rentals, close to the lighthouse and Anastasia State Park. A good split between beach mornings and history afternoons.
Vilano Beach
Just north of downtown across the Usina Bridge. Quieter beach stays with quick access to the historic district and Fort Mose.
San Marco Avenue & the US-1 corridor
Chain hotels and motels a short drive or long walk from the historic district, often with free parking. A practical choice for budget trips and larger groups.
Booking tips
When is St. Augustine busiest?
Weekends, spring break, summer and the Nights of Lights holiday season (roughly November through January) fill up first. Book early for those dates.
Is parking included downtown?
Often not. Many historic inns have limited or paid parking. The city's Historic Downtown Parking Facility near the Visitor Information Center is a common choice.
Should I stay downtown or at the beach?
If walking adventures are your main plan, stay in or near the historic district. If you want beach time every day, Anastasia Island is a short drive away.
